Camino Bike Guide for the Camino de Santiago
How much of the Camino will I ride? The Camino goes for almost 500 miles across northern Spain. We will ride the last 200 miles.
How many miles of unpaved trail will I ride? That is flexible. Anywhere from 50% to 10%. Check out "About the biking" under the "Trips" menu.
Can I ride on a paved road instead of the trail? Yes, there is almost always a road option. At times, it makes more sense to ride on the road.
How much will transportation cost? The train to Leon costs about $40 and can be booked on Renfe.com. A flight from Santiago to Madrid costs between $40-80 and can be booked using Vayama.com.
How much does food cost? You can buy good 3 course meals for $10-15 dollars.
What if I can't keep up with the group? I will manage the group and make sure noone gets lost or left behind.
Can I ride ahead? I will explain daily ride options. We typically will have a meeting point in the middle of the ride for those that want to ride ahead.
What does a typical day look like? Wake up at 8:00. Eat breakfast at the hotel. Start riding by 9:00. Stop and take some pictures of a medieval town. Coffee break at 10:30. Stop and see a church. Eat lunch at 1:00. Arrive at destination around 3:30. Have a drink and appetizer. Go swimming or have a Spa if available. Get cleaned up. Free time to rest, explore or walk around the town from 6:00 to 9:00. Meet up and find some place to eat dinner. Go back to the hotel around 11pm.
Do I need to train before I go? Yes, you need to get some longer rides in to make sure you are comfortable on the bike.
What do I pack? I will provide you a packing list.
Am I too old? It depends on your level of fitness. I took a 78-year-old woman last year.
Do I need to know Spanish? Some basic vocabulary would be helpful but it's not necessary.
What is the one thing I shouldn't miss? The cathedral is Leon is stunning. It is the one thing you shouldn't miss.
